I found that my Word document with lots of images kept growing and at one point reach 27MB.
I wanted a solution. I ran Document Inspect (File – Check for Issues). It found some Embedded Objects. What is that?

OK. It means that when I pasted images into my Word document, system preserves image as an editable object (similar to Excel file embedded into Word document). Next step for me was to find all these embedded objects and convert them to simple images.

One site instructs to to use Shift+Ctrl+F9 convert embedded objects into an images, but this did not work for me (http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/office/forum/office_2010-word/is-there-any-way-to-convert-all-objects-embedded/a22587a9-6cdd-43e7-98bf-ba726550ed99?db=5&auth=1).

Instead, I copied the image into MSPAINT on a remote PC, and then copy it back into Word document.

After you convert all embedded pictures into simple images, run the inspection one more time.

To find all embedded objects in Word, press F5, and search for Objects.

    Good luck.
