Here is an error message that I experienced on W2K8 R2 Server (Microsoft Windows [Version 6.1.7601]), on SQL 2008 Server Express (10.50.1600.1).

I was trying to start SQL Server Instance service (the main service), and here the Even Viewer message that I would get:

SQL Server Assertion: File: <sosexcept.cpp>, line=2480 Failed
Assertion = 'FALSE'. This error may be timing-related.
If the error persists after rerunning the statement,
use DBCC CHECKDB to check the database for structural integrity,
or restart the server to ensure in-memory data structures
    are not corrupted.

Additional details – Event ID 17066

The solution was to wait for a couple of days, run Windows update and restart a couple of times. This message is now is gone and problem repaired itself.
